Frequently Asked Questions
- What if my air conditioner is frozen?
If your air conditioner is not blowing cool air and you notice that the system seems to be frozen or there is ice build up on the lines to the outside compressor or in the inside unit (usually around the coils), take the following steps:
1) Turn off the system to allow the ice to thaw. You can run the fan to speed up the thawing process.
2) Check the filter; change it if is dirty. Typically, the filter needs to be changed at least every three months.
3) If the system still does not provide cool air, then the problem may be from a lack of coolant within the system. At this point call an air conditioning professional who is qualified to check the coolant level and licensed to provide the correct type and amount of coolant for your system.
- The coolant is not supposed to leak from the system, but there are numerous twists and turns in the coolant lines between the outside and inside units. If the leak is small, adding coolant infrequently may be the best choice.
- However, if a technician added coolant recently and the system ices up again, it will be necessary to find and repair the leak or replace the system. You will want to discuss your options with an air conditioning professional.
- Why should I perform preventive maintenance?
Heating and cooling systems work hard to perform their functions for your household. By performing preventive maintenance, or servicing your system regularly, you can maximize the lifecycle of your heating or cooling unit and guard against many unexpected failures. To ensure maximum efficiency, uncover leaks, rust, rot, soot, frayed wires and corroded electrical contacts you should have maintenance done on your air conditioning system twice a year as it enables technicians to foresee any possible problems that may occur in the near future. Our VALUE CARE CLUB membership is specifically designed to keep your air conditioning system running at its peak efficiency year-round. - How often should I replace my filters?
For optimal efficiency and filtration, we recommend that you replace your disposable filters at least once a month. If you have washable filters, they should be cleaned once a month. - How can I increase the life span and efficiency of my heating and cooling systems?
The most important thing you can do is replace your filters frequently and perform preventative maintenance checks twice a year. Also, a system heats and cools more evenly when the blower is in the "on" position. The blower provides constant air movement throughout the home, and allows for better filtration. You can also close your shades, drapes or shutters on windows that are exposed to extreme sunlight. - What temperature should I set my thermostat?
During the hot weather months
The average temperature setting is 78 F to 80 F.
During the cold weather months
The average temperature setting is 70 F to 72 F.
In order not to overwork your system you shouldn’t adjust the temperature more than 5 degrees when you are not at home. - What are the advantages of a programmable thermostat?
There are different programmable thermostats which offer many different features. However, because they are electronic, they are all more accurate and efficient than thermostats that contain mercury. With programmable thermostats you can also control the temperature in your home at different times of day automatically. - How much does a new replacement system cost?
